Well this is the debate my husband and I had the other evening with 2 of our non children, but dog guardian friends. Sid commented that my dog Layla is not obedient enough, and I agree. Particularity after working with a puppy recently that is really well behaved. Anyway I commented that we are not regulated or routine enough in our rules with either the kids or the dog. He argued that we cant compare dogs and children.....I disagree. Start the foundation strong, with love and boundaries - and continue. I do this and have fabulous young adult children, its just that they like my dog dont always stop and let me through the door first, and would not be considerate of my hungry belly being more important than theirs. I let that happen, and Im OK with it! I will always believe we have the ability to learn and make changes where necessary which is why I always carry treats in my Houndbag and privileges up my sleeve. Works for my kids and the dog!!!!!
Life well, live honestly, live with a big heart and much joy XO

I wholeheartedly agree!
ReplyDeleteMy dog is an service dog, and I have trained him myself since he was 6 weeks old.
And quite frequently parents in malls, restaurants, airports etc. jokingly ask me whether I could train their children to be as well behaved as my dog.... :P
*laugh*
I much rather train dogs than children though - dogs learn faster. :P
